1st ISRS / MAGRABI Meeting Report
A review the first ISRS/Magrabi Meeting

The first ISRS/MAGRABI meeting was held in Intercontinental hotel in Jeddah-KSA May 2010, which has a peculiar location in Jeddah. The Main hall was convenient with a near by wide exhibition area, for which many companies were presented.

The day began with a two-hour lecture by Dr. Stephen Klyce (USA), who discussed topography and wavefront analysis and was full of extraordinary information. The schedule continued with the second session on Excimer laser based procedures, in which Dr. Osama Ibrahim (EGYPT) started talking about how to evaluate patients & how to select the proper procedure for each patient. Then Dr. Alaa El-Danasoury (KSA) presented basics of ablation profiles, followed by Dr. Marguerite McDonald (USA) who talked about different types of surface ablations, their indications, techniques and complications.

Dr. Tamer Gamaly (OMAN) addressed mechanical and Femtolaser LASIK flaps, then Dr. Osama Ibrahim (EGYPT) started the talk about LASIK complications which was continued by Dr. Marguerite McDonald (USA) who emphasized infection, inflammation and dry eye after LASIK. Finally Dr. Stephen Klyce (USA) presented etiology and management of post LASIK ectasia. The third session was on lens based procedures, where Dr. Alaa El-Danasoury (KSA) presented an overview of different Phakic IOLs, then Dr. Ahmed El-Masry (EGYPT) talked about indications and complications of refractive lens exchange as well as premium IOLs.

A session on the Intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) session with Dr. Tarek Ibrahim (UAE) started the day, followed by Dr. Jorge Alio (SPAIN), who talked about mechanism of action of the ICRS. Dr. Islam Hamdi (KSA) presented the 2010 guidelines for ferrara rings, then Dr. Jorge Alio (SPAIN) continued talking about the new Myoring and its use in keratoconus then Dr. Tarek Ibrahim (UAE) showed the road map for INTACS implantations. Finally Dr. Khaled Abd Al-Rahman (KSA) presented the keratometric changes of cornea with ICRS, preoperatively and 3 months post operatively.  

The second session was about Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (CCCL), where Dr. Osama Ibrahim (EGYPT) talked about its mechanism of action and techniques, followed by Dr. Mohmed Hantera (KSA), who presented its clinical results & complications. Finally Dr. Ahmed El-Masry (EGYPT) presented CCCL and ICRS cases. This concluded the ISRS course.

The opening ceremony was on the same day afternoon, where Dr. Alaa El-Danasoury welcomed everybody, and discussed the ISRS structure and benefits of joining the organization, as well as the activities of the ISRS in the year 2010 and the coming meetings where the ISRS will be participating. Mr. Moutasem Ali Reza, the managing director of MAGRABI Eye & Ear Hospitals and centers talked also about the role of MAGRABI as a unique organization in the Middle East, and its role in the ophthalmology field in the area.

Three more sessions followed the opening ceremony, talking about different interesting topics. The first was Refractive Surgery; What's up? The second was new news to be used in refractive surgery by ophthalmologists. The third session was on hot topics on the cornea.

The third day was mainly about Cataract & Glaucoma. Two sessions were about Glaucoma, in which the first one concentrated on updates on Glaucoma management; diagnostically and medically. The second session was on the updates surgically. The last two sessions were about Cataract, The main talks of the first session were on how to optimize outcomes after Cataract surgery. The second session was a video session about different Cataract cases. By this the meeting was concluded.
